Portrait drawing

“Alicja loved the workshop very much. She was very proud of her drawing and now always mentions you with a smile on her face.” (Agniezka with daughter Alicia, 7). During this workshop, children observed how to draw our eyes, noses, mouth and ears and how these parts deserve our specific attention. I was very pleased to hear one of the participants saying “I have now fallen in love with my ears” and thought well that’s a lesson acquired! In a second exercise we revamped Paul Klee’s portrait, giving it one side in the light and keeping the other one in the shade. Lastly, each child drew a self-portrait. The results were amazing as shown by the picture here.

Workshop Drawing a portrait

The workshop is for children aged 5 to 12 and aims to teach them how to draw a portrait. 

We will look at different styles and works by celebrated artists such as Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Picasso. 

We will try out a few techniques – and tricks – to draw different expressions and head shapes. There will be lots of drawing, starting with little warm-up exercises, building up to the design of a self-portait – not easy but great fun!
The workshops are for a maximum of 5 children, and all materials (and refreshments) are included in the price. 
This will also be an opportunity for children who followed the Tudor tour at the National Portrait Gallery to build on the basic principles they learned therein.

Tudor tour

What a wonderful tour last Saturday. We went on the discovery of the Real Tudors at the National Portrait Gallery (to be seen until 1 March 2015).

Well done all children who listened so carefully, asked many questions and drew splendid portraits.

Last but not least even parents joined in for the drawing of Henry the 8th portrait, a part of a copy of the original mural by Holbein the Younger which burnt down in 1698 when most of Whitehall palace also burnt down.
