Little known is Belgian designer Gustave Serrurier-Bovy (1858-1910). He was a close contemporary of and collected by Victor Horta (1861-1947). He set up concept stores in his town of residence (Liège), Brussels, France and the Netherlands. In 1907 he was invited by a young and wealthy Argentinian, Luis Ortiz Bsualdo to furnish his villa recently built at the seaside resort of Mar del Plata.
Let me invite you this month of June to explore the fascinating Shoreditch art scene with me. We will discover an extraordinary range of art in often hard-to-find places – above a pub, below a restaurant, behind closed doors. Emerging galleries, established art spaces, street art nailed to a wall in a cul de sac; Shoreditch is always evolving, reinventing. You will see work by Frank Bowling whose exhibition just opened at the Tate (but in the calm of a local gallery), and we will hear from the curators and gallerists who are most familiar with the work on their walls.
